Overview

Fumadocs is a React.js documentation framework built around Markdown and MDX. It is split into separate packages — fumadocs-mdx for content, fumadocs-core as a headless library and fumadocs-ui for the interface — so it can be adopted whole or used as a library. It ships adapters for Next.js, Tanstack Start, React Router and Waku, and reads content from MDX files, Content Collections or a CMS.

Best for
Developers building documentation sites for React apps who want to customise the UI themselves.
Pricing

Strengths and trade-offs

Strengths

  • Official support for Next.js, Tanstack Start, React Router and Waku
  • Headless mode to plug in your own UI, or use the bundled themes
  • Markdown and MDX with Shiki highlighting, callouts and code tabs
  • Open source on GitHub; CLI scaffolds a project in one command

Trade-offs

  • React only; no support for non-React stacks is stated
  • Configuration and prior knowledge needed — hence the separate Fumapress
  • Community-run: maintenance depends on contributors and sponsors
