Overview

Scrapy is an open source Python framework for web scraping. `scrapy startproject` lays out a project with spiders, items, pipelines and settings, and `scrapy crawl` runs it. The core covers CSS and XPath selectors, an async engine with throttling, item pipelines and feed exports to JSON, CSV and S3; browser rendering, monitoring and anti-ban come from add-ons.

Best for
Python developers building maintainable crawlers that extract public web data at scale.
Pricing
No prices are shown; the pages describe Scrapy as free, open source and BSD-licensed.

Strengths and trade-offs

Strengths

  • CSS and XPath selectors, mixable, with regex and defaults
  • Scaffolds a full project: spiders, items, pipelines, settings
  • Async engine with throttling; feed exports to JSON, CSV, S3
  • 15+ years of releases, 500+ contributors, maintained by Zyte

Trade-offs

  • Browser rendering, monitoring and anti-ban need separate extensions
  • Python-only; assumes you can write and maintain spider code
  • Reactor-less mode was still experimental at v2.15.0
  • A framework you host yourself, not a managed scraping service
