Overview

Matrix is an open protocol for decentralised communication, used for chat between friends, families, communities and co-workers. Users pick a homeserver — the Foundation's public matrix.org server, another shared server, or their own — which determines where their data is held. The specification, clients, servers and bots are open source and documented for developers.

Best for
Communities and developers wanting decentralised chat they can host themselves or build on
Pricing
No prices are shown; the matrix.org homeserver has free and premium plans but the page states pricing details have not yet been finalised.
