Overview
Bifrost is an open-source AI gateway that puts one OpenAI-compatible API in front of 1,000+ models from 8+ providers. It handles routing, automatic fallbacks, semantic caching, budgets and virtual keys, and includes an MCP gateway for tool access. Self-hosted via Docker, Kubernetes or a Go binary, with OpenTelemetry output; Enterprise adds clustering, SSO and guardrails.
- Best for
- Engineering teams self-hosting an LLM, MCP and agent gateway in front of many model providers
- Pricing
- The OSS edition is free forever and self-managed; Enterprise is custom-priced with a 14-day free trial, and no figures are published.
- Runs on
- Self-hostedCLI
Strengths and trade-offs
Strengths
- Apache 2.0, self-hosted via Docker, Kubernetes or a Go binary
- One base URL change to swap in for OpenAI, Anthropic or LangChain
- Budgets, virtual keys and rate limits are in the free tier
- OpenTelemetry traces and Prometheus metrics built in
Trade-offs
- Guardrails, SSO, RBAC, audit logs and clustering are Enterprise-only
- No Enterprise prices published; you have to request a licence
- OSS support is docs and Discord only, with no SLA
- Speed claims rest on vendor-run benchmarks against LiteLLM
