Overview

Bifrost is an open-source AI gateway that puts one OpenAI-compatible API in front of 1,000+ models from 8+ providers. It handles routing, automatic fallbacks, semantic caching, budgets and virtual keys, and includes an MCP gateway for tool access. Self-hosted via Docker, Kubernetes or a Go binary, with OpenTelemetry output; Enterprise adds clustering, SSO and guardrails.

Pricing

Runs on
Self-hostedCLI

Strengths and trade-offs

Strengths

  • Apache 2.0, self-hosted via Docker, Kubernetes or a Go binary
  • One base URL change to swap in for OpenAI, Anthropic or LangChain
  • Budgets, virtual keys and rate limits are in the free tier
  • OpenTelemetry traces and Prometheus metrics built in

Trade-offs

  • Guardrails, SSO, RBAC, audit logs and clustering are Enterprise-only
  • No Enterprise prices published; you have to request a licence
  • OSS support is docs and Discord only, with no SLA
  • Speed claims rest on vendor-run benchmarks against LiteLLM
