Overview

AWS Cloud9 is a cloud-based integrated development environment for writing, running and debugging code in a browser. It includes a code editor, debugger and terminal, and comes prepackaged with tools for languages including JavaScript, Python and PHP. Environments run on an Amazon EC2 instance or an existing Linux server connected over SSH, and can be shared with a team in real time.

Best for
Developers on AWS wanting a browser-based IDE for shared, serverless work without local setup
Pricing
No additional charge for AWS Cloud9 itself; you pay normal AWS rates for the compute and storage used, with a published example of $2.05 a month for 90 hours on a t2.micro with a 10 GB volume, and AWS Free Tier-eligible accounts can use it free.
Runs on
WebSelf-hostedCLI

Strengths and trade-offs

Strengths

  • Write, run and debug code in a browser with no local setup
  • Prepackaged tools for JavaScript, Python, PHP and more
  • Real-time environment sharing for pair programming
  • No charge for the IDE; SSH to an existing Linux server is free

Trade-offs

  • You still pay normal AWS rates for EC2, EBS and other resources used
  • Requires an AWS account and an internet-connected machine
  • Cost varies by instance type, so it needs the pricing calculator to estimate
