Overview
Write.as is a pared-down blogging platform that opens on an editor screen, with Markdown or rich text input and drafts saved to your browser. Published posts reach readers via the web, RSS, email subscriptions and ActivityPub, and paid plans add custom domains, themes and up to three blogs. Work can be exported or self-hosted with WriteFreely, the open source software behind it.
- Best for
- Individual writers and small teams wanting an ad-free blog or newsletter rather than a CMS.
- Pricing
- A $0 Free plan is listed but closed for now; Pro starts at $6 per month and Team at $25 per month, both billed yearly, with Enterprise by enquiry.
- Runs on
- WebAndroidBrowser extensionSelf-hostedCLI
Strengths and trade-offs
Strengths
- Markdown or rich text editing, with no ads for writers or readers
- Custom domain with SSL, themes and code injection on paid plans
- RSS, email subscriptions and ActivityPub federation included
- Export posts or self-host with the open source WriteFreely
Trade-offs
- The Free plan is marked 'Closed for now', so paid tiers are the way in
- Not a CMS: no e-commerce or complex site building
- Team plan caps at five members; more needs an Enterprise deal
- Cancelling disables custom domains and designs, not just billing
