Overview
Vagrant is a command line utility for managing the lifecycle of virtual machines, isolating dependencies and their configuration within a single disposable environment. A Vagrantfile describes the machine's configuration and how to provision it, and the vagrant up command creates and configures it. Boxes package environments for reuse, and providers manage other types of machines.
- Best for
- Developers who want reproducible, disposable virtual machine environments defined in a single file
- Pricing
- The captured page shows no prices for Vagrant itself; the only pricing statement is that the separate HCP Vagrant Registry can be tried for free.
- Runs on
- macOSWindowsLinuxCLI
Strengths and trade-offs
Strengths
- One Vagrantfile defines machine configuration and provisioning
- Boxes are a reusable package format with a public catalog
- Synced folders and networking between host and guest are built in
- Providers and plugins extend it to other machine types
Trade-offs
- Command line only; no graphical interface is described
- Needs a separate provider to actually run the machines
- Added functionality depends on plugins rather than the core tool
- Captured pages show no pricing, licensing or support terms
