Overview

Podman manages containers, pods and images from your local environment, running daemonless and supporting rootless containers. It is compatible with other OCI container formats including Docker, so existing Docker containers and docker-compose files run on it. It can create, start and inspect pods, play Kubernetes YAML directly, generate YAML from pods and deploy to existing clusters.

Best for
Developers managing containers and pods locally who also target Kubernetes environments

  • Plays and generates Kubernetes YAML, and deploys to clusters

Trade-offs

  • You install and run it yourself; no hosted or managed option is shown
  • No commercial support, SLA or paid tier is mentioned on the site
  • Hyper-V users needed admin rights for machine tasks before Podman 6
