Overview

Hackatime is a free, open-source coding time tracker from Hack Club, offered as a replacement for WakaTime. It uses the existing WakaTime plugin ecosystem: install your editor's plugin, enter a Hackatime API key and point api_url at Hackatime. It records time, language and file-level metadata only, keeps history indefinitely, and can be exported as JSON or self-hosted.

Strengths and trade-offs

Strengths

  • Free, with history stored indefinitely and no two-week cut-off
  • Works with existing WakaTime plugins across 70+ editors
  • MIT-licensed and self-hostable for full data control
  • Full history exportable as JSON, plus a documented API

Trade-offs

  • Leaderboards are listed as coming soon, not available yet
  • Needs a third-party WakaTime plugin plus manual API key and api_url setup
  • Hosted service still receives file, project and language metadata
  • Free club-run project; no paid support or uptime commitments stated
