Overview

Garage is an S3-compatible object store shipped as a single dependency-free binary for Linux. It replicates each chunk of data across three zones and is built to run over the public Internet between multiple sites rather than a dedicated backbone. Its design draws on the Dynamo, CRDT and Maglev papers.

Best for
Sysadmins self-hosting S3-compatible storage across several sites on modest, second-hand hardware
Pricing

Strengths and trade-offs

Strengths

  • Single dependency-free binary runs on any Linux distribution
  • Implements the Amazon S3 API, so existing clients work
  • Each chunk of data is replicated across 3 zones
  • Runs on 10-year-old x86_64 or ARM kit with 1 GB RAM

Trade-offs

  • Redundancy model assumes three separate zones, not one machine
  • Needs network latency of 200 ms or less and 50 Mbps or more
  • Only Linux is named as a supported platform
  • S3 is the only API stated; no other storage protocols mentioned
